Garage Door Spring Repair in Garden City

Heard a bang from the garage and now the door won’t lift? That’s almost always a spring. We replace torsion and extension springs with the right size for your door — usually in one visit.

  • Torsion & extension
  • Replaced in pairs
  • 4-year warranty

Torsion springs

The spring on a bar across the top of the door. When one breaks you will see a gap of an inch or two in the coil. Torsion springs are wound to match the weight of your door — too strong and the door flies up, too weak and it crashes down — which is why we weigh the door and size the springs instead of guessing.

Most double doors have two torsion springs. When one breaks, the other has done the same number of cycles, so we replace both.

Extension springs

Long springs that stretch along the horizontal tracks on each side — common on older and single doors. They must have safety cables threaded through them, so a broken spring can’t whip across the garage. We replace extension springs in pairs and add or replace the safety cables.

On many older doors we can also convert from extension to torsion springs for smoother, safer operation.

Why springs break in a Garden City winter

A spring is rated for a number of open-and-close cycles — standard springs are commonly rated around 10,000. A busy family door uses that up in seven to ten years. Cold is what finishes them: steel is least forgiving on the first freezing mornings, so our busiest spring days come right after the season’s first hard cold snap.

Rust adds to it. Damp winters, road salt carried in on the car and a garage that never quite dries out leave surface rust on the coils, and rust pits are where springs crack.

Signs a spring is on its way out

  • The door feels heavier than it used to
  • It won’t stay put when you let go halfway
  • It rises unevenly or jerks
  • The opener strains or reverses on cold mornings
  • Rust or a visible gap in the coil

High-cycle springs for busy garages

If the garage is your main way in and out of the house, ask about high-cycle springs. They cost more up front but are rated for far more cycles than standard springs, so you replace them much less often.

Garage door spring questions

Updated October 2026. Something else? Call (516) 493-4680 and tell us what the door is doing.

How long does garage door spring replacement take?

Usually about an hour for a standard door, including checking the cables, rollers and opener afterward.

Should both garage door springs be replaced?

Yes, when the door has two. Both springs have done the same number of cycles, so the second one usually breaks soon after the first.

Is it safe to replace a garage door spring myself?

We don’t recommend it. Torsion springs are wound under high tension and need proper winding bars and experience; mistakes cause serious injuries.

Do you fix springs on Sunday?

On Sunday we take emergency calls only — for example a door stuck open or a car trapped inside. Otherwise we schedule Monday to Friday.

Broken spring? Leave the door closed and call.

Tell us what the door is doing. We give you the price before we start, and in many cases we fix it the same day.
